Help us build a new Mlambe School Block

School classrooms built by The Mlambe Project in July 2015 for children studying in Years 5-6.

We at The Mlambe Project use education and sustainable innovation ideas to help break the cycle of poverty and open up life opportunities for children in the area of Chikolongo, Southern Malawi.

Let's fill you in:

We currently have 545 children enrolled at Mlambe Primary School, with the buildings and facilities capable of teaching children from School Year 1 up to Year 6. In Malawi a fully operational primary school should teach children up to School Year 8 (around 14 years old). This means that students at The Mlambe Primary School are unable to complete their primary education with us.

After finishing School Year 6 at The Mlambe School, children have to study elsewhere to complete their primary education; with the next closest school being an hour’s walk away. The is simply too far for many families who need their children to help with farming, meaning these children never have the chance to compete their primary education. Teachers estimate that after School Year 6- when children must leave Mlambe School- up to half of all pupils will finish their school education forever.

The completion rate for primary education in Malawi as a whole is just 59% of students (World Bank DevelopmentIndicators, 2007). This could be substantially higher if children had the opportunity to complete primary education in close proximity to their village.

We are asking for your help to build an additional school block and give the children of Chikolongo the chance of a better life. The new classrooms will allow 60 more children to complete their primary education at Mlambe School each year.

Our aim is to complete the new school block by this September, ready for the start of the academic year and in time to enrol children in School Years 7 and 8.

This gives us the deadline of starting the building work by June 2017.

To fund the costs of building two new school classrooms (a new ‘school block’) we will need to raise £8300.

The breakdown:

● £3000 - Wages for 13 builders for 3 month construction period.

● £5100 - Building materials.

● £200 - Food for builders over 3 month period.

Since we rely entirely on voluntary donations, we urgently need your support if we want to build these new classrooms.

All money raised will go towards funding the school block and the charity’s other vital work at Mlambe School.
