The Mlambe Project was created by a group of Physics students from The University of Manchester in 2012.

Their initial aim was to build a school in Malawi using conventional western building techniques and resources. After discovering that this was likely to prove too costly, they sought alternative construction techniques.

During their research, Jamie (co-founder of the charity) came across a technique known as 'earthbag building'.

This technique addresses the 'triple bottom line', as it is simultaneously tackles environmental, economic and socially sustainable issues; this is due to its very nature as a low impact and low cost alternative construction method.

Earthbag building in Malawi

HOW WE BEGAN

After trialling earthbag building with huge success at Mlambe School, we now aim to replicate and hone the technique aross other sites in Malawi in order to obtain a perfect building model.
